Grout Calculator
Estimate material for your tile project
Planning a tile project can feel overwhelming, but figuring out your materials shouldn't be.
Whether you are tiling a kitchen backsplash, a bathroom floor, or an outdoor patio, knowing exactly how much grout to buy is the key to a seamless installation.
Use our Precision Grout Calculator above to estimate the pounds and bags required for your specific project, preventing those frustrating mid-project trips to the hardware store.
How to Use This Grout Calculator
We’ve designed this calculator to be as flexible as your design choices. Just follow these steps:
- Measure Your Tile: Enter the Length and Width of your chosen tile in inches (e.g., for a subway tile, enter 3 and 6).
- Select Thickness: Choose your tile's thickness from the dropdown menu. Thicker tiles require more grout to fill the depth of the joint.
- Choose Your Spacing: Select your desired Grout Joint width. Wider joints (like those used in farmhouse styles) consume significantly more material than tight, modern joints.
- Enter Project Area: Input the Total Area you are tiling in Square Feet.
- Check Bag Size: By default, we calculate for standard 25 lb bags. If you are buying smaller boxes (e.g., 10 lbs) or larger commercial sacks (e.g., 50 lbs), adjust the Bag Weight field accordingly.
- Calculate: Click the button to see your total estimated weight and the number of bags to purchase.
⚠️ Important Notes & Limitations
While this tool uses industry-standard formulas (incorporating a specific gravity of 1.8 for sanded grout), please keep the following in mind:
- The Waste Factor: We automatically include a 10% waste factor in the result to account for spillage, cleaning, and material left in the bucket.
- Grout Type Matters: This estimate is optimized for standard cement-based grouts (sanded or unsanded). Epoxy grouts or urethane grouts have different densities and may require checking the manufacturer's specific coverage charts.
- Tile Variance: If you are using irregular stone or handmade tiles with uneven edges, your joint widths may vary, potentially requiring more grout than a standard machine-cut tile.
💡 Designer Pro Tip: Don't treat grout as an afterthought! The color you choose can completely change the look of your room. Match the grout to the tile color for a seamless, expansive look, or choose a contrasting color (like dark grey grout on white tile) to highlight the geometric pattern and add texture to the space.
