8 Useful Tips to Make Bedroom Door Soundproof

No one wants outside noise and unnecessary sounds inside their bedroom.

Your bedroom is a place where you should be able to relax and sleep soundly without any disturbance from the outside.

Often, this noise trespasses into your room through the gaps in your door. The space between the floor and the bottom of the door is often the culprit.

Moreover, if your door is thin and hollow, it makes it even easier for sound to travel through.

If you want to get rid of this issue, we recommend soundproofing your bedroom door. In this article, we’ll share a few tips on how you can do that.

Without further ado, let’s dive right in and help you soundproof your bedroom door!

Identify and Seal Cracks and Holes

First of all, you need to closely check your door for any cracks or holes.

Sometimes a tiny crack can play a huge role in letting outside noise into your room.

So, run your hands over the surface of your door and check for any gaps or cracks.

Check if your door closes properly. Often, the doors aren’t air-tight, and that becomes a reason for trespassing of noise.

If you find even a small crack or gap, it is essential to block and seal it to reduce the noise inside your bedroom. You can do this by using a door sealing kit.

Most door sealing kits have three components, including door bottoms, a threshold, and a neoprene door jamb.

The door jambs are made of rubber and seal the door completely when it is closed.

You can attach these jambs on either side of the door as well as the door frame.

Apply Door Thresholds

Door thresholds or door saddles are other important tools to have when it comes to sealing your bedroom door.

The gap between the bottom of the door and the floor allows the most outside noise, so the threshold offers a great solution for it.

The thresholds are installed on the floor just below the door. You can use the neoprene bulb from the sealing kit to fit the threshold.

This will allow you to align it with the door and tighten the seal perfectly and cover all the gaps caused due to misalignment.

If you want even better results, then use the threshold along with door jambs to provide an extra layer of seal on each side of the door.

Seal the Gaps Under Moldings

Gaps under the molding of the doors are also a common occurrence, so you need to seal them in order to prevent outside sounds from entering.

There are multiple ways that you can do this. Applying sealants is a good option for blocking the outside sounds from entering.

You can also use an adhering rubber weatherstripping to cover the gaps at the bottom of the door to block the noise from entering your room.

If the bottom of your door is really the problem and you’re looking for an immediate and temporary solution, then you can also cover the gap with a blanket or a rolled towel.

Install Acoustic Panels/Fiberglass

Another highly effective method of soundproofing your bedroom door for good is to install soundproof acoustic panels or fiberglass on it.

The panels minimize the entry of outside sounds, whereas fiberglass completely blocks them.

Soundproof foam is another option that you can look into because it’s budget-friendly but not as effective as fiberglass.

Additionally, the fiberglass works well and enhances the overall décor of your room.

Install Automatic Bottoms

If you want your door to work well with a threshold or a sealant, then consider installing automatic door bottoms.

It uses a concealed flat spring mechanism that automatically activates. When the door is closed, it presses the threshold or seals towards it to close it tightly without leaving any room for gaps.

This is an excellent option if you have a little budget. Once you have installed it, it works automatically, and you don’t need to worry about outside noise anymore.

So, it’s a long-term solution that requires no effort on your end.

The seal is much tighter than all the other methods, so it makes the bedroom door completely soundproof and air-tight.

Install a Door Gasket

Another effective option for sealing the gap between the door and the floor is to use gaskets around or under the door frame.

Gaskets not only cover the gaps between the floor and the door’s bottom but can also be installed around the door and provide a complete seal.

The door gaskets are easy to install, but you’ll have to remove the door frame to do that.

Line up the gasket inside it and then close the door frame.

You can find these gaskets at a home improvement store very easily and for a low price.

Replace the Door with a Soundproof One

If your bedroom door is old and thin, then we recommend replacing it with a new solid and thick one.

The thinner a door is, the easier it is for air and sound to travel through it.

The type of door and the material it’s made from makes all the difference in determining how much noise enters your room.

We recommend replacing your existing door with a composite door to cancel and block all the noise and sounds from the outside.

You can install acoustic panels on the door to make it completely soundproof. This is one of the permanent and long-term fixes for the noise problem in your bedroom.

They can be drawn away anytime you like and don’t cost as much as replacing the entire door.
